Adrift is my grandmother’s childhood house, rebuilt from her recollections, then set floating on a digital ocean. Live data from a weather station in the Atlantic Ocean drives the house’s rotation, the intensity of the waves, and the rocking of the barge.
When outports were emptied, some families took their houses with them: lifted from their foundations, floated, and towed toward unfamiliar shores. Adrift restages that image as a perpetual crossing, a house lost at sea. A dwelling can be moved, but it cannot carry intact the life that belonged to its original shore.
Adrift resettles the house a third time, into a virtual space linked by data to the Atlantic Ocean it answers to. You meet it through a screen: a house still crossing, never arrived. Neither a resettled resident nor their home can return to the life left behind.
